English actress Madeleine Carroll, was famous in both the U.S. and Britain during the ’30s and ’40s. She was the highest-paid actress in the world when her career was at its peak. Her earnings in 1938 were at the time a jaw-dropping $250K. Carroll appeared in the Alfred Hitchcock movie, The 39 Steps. She was also remembered for setting aside her career after her sister Marguerite died in the London Blitz, to assist injured servicemen and children who were displaced and maimed by the war.
